The Japanese version of the hit K-drama “Marry My Husband” is now streaming on Prime Video.
“Marry My Husband” tells the story of Misa, a woman who has always lived her life as a “supporting character” in service of others. When betrayal by her husband and best friend leads to her death, she is mysteriously granted a second chance, traveling back in time by ten years.
Determined to rewrite her fate, she sheds her former “nice person” persona to pursue revenge. However, her plans take an unexpected turn when she meets Section Chief Suzuki Wataru, a man absent from her previous life, who begins to change her revenge-focused heart. Through this second chance, Misa discovers what it means to truly become the protagonist of her own story.
Koshiba Fuka leads the cast as Kobe Misa, following her acclaimed performance in NHK’s “Berabou” (2025). Satoh Takeru, widely known for the “Rurouni Kenshin” series and “First Love” (2022), stars as Suzuki Wataru, a composed section chief whose unexpected appearance changes the course of Misa’s second chance at life.
Rising star Shiraishi Sei, fresh from her success in “Captured Airport” (2024), takes on the role of Esaka Reina, Misa’s childhood friend and confidante. SUPER EIGHT member Yokoyama You, who has proven his acting prowess in NHK’s “Maiagare!” (2022-23) and “Promise: The Truth After 16 Years” (2024), rounds out the main cast as Hirano Tomoya, Misa’s husband whose betrayal sets the story in motion.
‘Marry My Husband’: From webtoon to Korean and Japanese Drama
Based on the popular NAVER web novel, this Japan-Korea joint project marks the Japanese adaptation of the hit series. The original webtoon topped LINE Manga rankings*, and its Korean live-action adaptation on Prime Video garnered international acclaim. Following this success, CJ ENM, producer of the Oscar-winning film “Parasite” (2019), and Studio Dragon, known for international hits like “Crash Landing on You” (2019), have collaborated on their first Japanese production.
The series brings together exceptional creative talent from both Japan and Korea. The screenplay is penned by Ôshima Satomi, one of Japan’s most accomplished screenwriters, known for her signature style of delicate psychological portrayal and warm humor. Her impressive portfolio includes the emotional tour de force “1 Litre of Tears” (2005) and “Sayonara, Maestro!” (2024). She was recently honored with the Excellence in Screenplay Award at the 48th Japan Academy Prize for “90-sai. Nani ga Mededai” (2024).
Director Ahn Gil-ho, renowned for his masterful direction of suspense and human dramas, including the international hit series “The Glory” (2022), brings his expertise in crafting compelling narratives to this cross-cultural production.
Original story with Japanese touch
In a press release last April, the main cast commented on their characters and on the chance to be part of the Japanese version of “Marry My Husband.”
“It was such a fresh experience working with a Korean director and team. The whole vibe on set was completely different from what I’m used to,” said Koshiba Fuka, the female lead of “Marry My Husband.”
“I love how the script combines the best parts of the original story with a Japanese touch. While it’s fundamentally a revenge story, you can really feel Misa’s innate kindness and strength coming through. In playing Misa, who grows stronger as she pursues revenge, I wanted to show someone who Wataru naturally wants to protect and help — a character who struggles with the idea of revenge because she’s actually too kind and straightforward at heart. I tried to create someone the audience would really want to cheer for. I’m putting my all into making this something everyone can enjoy, so I hope you’ll look forward to when it starts streaming!” she added.
Grateful but challenged
For his their part, male lead Satoh Takeru and co-star Shiraishi Sei expressed their gratitude for being part of the project.
“I have long admired Director Ahn Gil-ho’s work, and I’m truly grateful for this opportunity to work together,” Satoh Takeru said.
“On set, language differences were rarely a barrier — we found ways to understand each other beyond words, creating a really fulfilling working environment. My character Wataru lives to protect Misa’s life. I focused on staying true to this core essence throughout my performance. The latter half of our story features elements unique to this Japanese version, so I think viewers will be on the edge of their seats — even those familiar with the original. I hope you’ll look forward to watching it when it streams,” he added.
Shiraishi Sei said, “Having long admired Director Ahn Gil-ho’s work, I’m deeply grateful for this invaluable opportunity to work under his direction.”
“While portraying Reina has been challenging, with many emotionally demanding scenes, the role has been incredibly fulfilling and has helped me discover new dimensions of myself as an performer that I never knew existed. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the final product and hearing viewers’ reactions. I sincerely hope this series will find its way into the hearts of many!” she added.
An obsessive character
“Playing Tomoya Hirano is unlike any role I’ve taken on before. He’s an incredibly obsessive character who I found challenging to understand at times,” said Yokoyama You.
“When I told people I’d be playing this role in a series that’s already gained such huge international acclaim, everyone was shocked, saying “You’re playing THAT role?!” But they all expressed how excited they were to see it. Our version has many elements unique to the Japanese adaptation, so I really hope everyone will look forward to watching it when it starts streaming!”
“Marry My Husband” Japanese version started streaming on Prime Video on June 27, 2005, in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Its 10 episodes are released on the streaming platform twice a week.
