As of Wednesday, September 10, the film tops Netflix’s Top 10 movies in the Philippines, followed by “Kpop Demon Hunters” and “The Negotiators.”
“Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” premiered on Netflix on September 4. It debuted at No. 3 in Netflix’s Top 10 movies in the Philippines for first week of September, following “Love Untangled” and “KpopDemon Hunters.”
Remake of ‘Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’
Dubbed as the country’s very first meta found footage horror film, “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” is the remake of the 2018 South Korean box office hit “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum.”
“Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” features a group of actors and personalities from the Philippines — acting as themselves —as they set out to explore and film in one of Taiwan’s most haunted places, Xinglin Hospital.
Actor Enrique Gil (“My Ex and Whys,” “Seven Sundays”) leads the cast of “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital.” Joining him are actress Jane De Leon (“Mars Ravelo’s Darna,” “Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme”), Alexa Miro and Rob Gomez (“A Girl and a Guy”), and beauty queen MJ Lastimosa (“Day Zero”). Also in the cast are real-life tarot reader Raf Pineda and content creator Ryan “Zarckaroo” Azurin.

Like in the Korean original, the amateur Filipino ghost hunters explore an abandoned hospital — in this remake, it’s the notorious Xinglin Hospital in Taiwan’s West Central District. It is reportedly one of the most haunted places in Taiwan due to its recurring paranormal activities.
“Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” is Reality MM Studios’ entry to the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) and the 2025 Manila International Film Festival (MIFF) in the U.S. In last year’s MMFF, it received nominations in eight categories and won the festival’s Best Sound award.
Renowned director and “Master of Horror” Erik Matti and veteran filmmaker Dondon Monteverde produced the film in partnership with Enrique Gil.

Meanwhile, the Korean version, “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum” (2018), was a found footage supernatural horror film directed by Jung Bum-shik. It was based on an actual psychiatric hospital located in Gwangju-si.
“Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum” starred actors Wi Ha-joon (“Squid Game”) and Park Sung-hoon (“The Glory,” “Queen of Tears”). With them are Park Ji-hyun (“The Divine Fury”), Oh Ah-yeon (“Mr. Sunshine”), Moon Ye-won (“Legal High”), Yoo Je-yoon (“Extreme Job”), and Lee Seung-wook (“Joseon Fist”).
Good news for those who want to compare the two versions: both are available on Netflix in the Philippines.
