Nam Joo-hyuk will star in “Vigilante,” a new dark Korean drama coming exclusively to Disney+ later this year.
A serial abuser gets a light sentence after beating and killing a woman in front of her kid. The child then spends years obsessing over revenge and delivering justice. Tired of seeing the legal system fail, and repeat offenders being set free, the victim’s child decides to step up and do something about it.
“Start-Up” and “Twenty-Five Twenty-One” actor Nam Joo-hyuk plays the role of the vengeful vigilante Kim Ji-yong.
A star student at the police academy, Ji-yong is a burgeoning martial arts master, and a bookish academic. For over a decade, the image of his mother being beaten and murdered by a bad-tempered stranger haunted him.
‘Vigilante,’ a revenge drama
When his mother’s attacker is set free, Ji-yong pursues the man, and catches him in the middle of another attack. He exacts his revenge on the non-repentant offender. This sets him along a path that will see him target other repeat offenders. Consequently, he unwittingly draws media and police attention. However, Ji-yong is unwilling to give up on his mission. He must use the knowledge he gained at the police academy to continue his work and avoid being caught.
Also in “Vigilante” is Yoo Ji-tae (“Oldboy,” “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”) as Jo Heon, a ruthless detective committed to stopping the vigilante at any cost. Meanwhile, Lee Joon-hyuk (“Stranger,” “Designated Survivor: 60 Days”) is Cho Kangok, who helps the Ji-yong. For his part, Kim So-jin (“The Spy Gone North,” “The King”) is Choi Miryeo, a broadcaster who exposes the vigilante’s actions.
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name by CRG and Kim Kyusam, “Vigilante” is directed by Choi Jeong-yeol.
Slated to debut later this year, “Vigilante” is just one of an ever-growing number of K-dramas on Disney+. Fans of criminal dramas can subscribe to enjoy access to “Big Bet” which stars Choi Min-sik as a serial entrepreneur who repeatedly crosses the line to help bolster his burgeoning casino business. Meanwhile, “Big Mouth” is about a lawyer who is arrested as part of the murder case he is investigating. The streaming service’s exclusive content also includes local APAC originals and global tentpole movies and series.
