“Twenty-Five Twenty-One” aired its finale, ending with its highest rating for the series. However, some of the show’s fans are up in arms after that bittersweet ending. It seems like 16 episodes are not enough for this beautiful K-drama, which somehow left some questions hanging.
1. Who is Min-chae’s father?
From the premiere up until the “Twenty-Five Twenty One” finale, we were all curious to know who Kim Min-chae’s father is. What we do know is that Mr. Kim is abroad and that he will have to be quarantined when he gets back.
Fans had different speculations about the identity of the mysterious Mr. Kim who married Na Hee-do. However, most were hoping that Mr. Kim is none other than Baek Yi-jin. Some said he might have used “Kim” for his screen name. Others speculated Yi-jin might have been adopted and Kim was his real surname.
Until the end we were waiting for that “Min-chae dad reveal”, which unfortunately never happened.
2. Is Na Hee-do still married?
Episode 14 gave Baekdo fans the most shocking blow when Yi-jin, during a live interview, congratulated Hee-do on her marriage. The only time the marriage was mentioned again was during the reunion of the Taeyang squad when Ji Seung-wan’s father died. Even then, it was only mentioned in passing when Hee-do talked about how breaking off an engagement was easier than getting a divorce. We wonder if she indeed got divorced.
3. How are Na Hee-do and Baek Yi-jin?
“Twenty-Five Twenty One” gave us the most poignant breakup scene when Na Hee-do and Baek Yi-jin finally get to say the things they wanted to say through Hee-do’s diary. A bitter breakup like the one they had left them with a lot of regrets. How could two people who were each other’s person become strangers all of a sudden? People do outgrow each other sometimes but I do hope that Yi-jin and Hee-do at least maintained their emotional connection that has been established from the get-go. Can they at least keep their “rainbow” connection? We can only hope so.
4. Is Baek Yi-jin married?
Baek Yi-jin gets to keep his promise to his family as they get to live together again after 11 years. We’re also happy that his hard work paid off, taking over Hee-do’s mom’s anchoring job for UBS News. Can we also just pause to admire Nam Joo-hyuk looking so fine as a news anchor?
While Yi-jin seems to be faring well in his career and family life, we wonder whether he’s married now. We never got to see the present Yi-jin or any of the other Taeyang squad except for Hee-do, which leads us to the last question.
5. Are the Taeyang squad still friends?
We get to see the Taeyang squad reunited in the “Twenty-Five Twenty-One” finale as adults busy with their respective careers. Seung-wan points out they only get to see each other when someone passes away. It stings but it’s true that adulting also means seeing less and less of some people important to you in the past.
When present Na Hee-do seemed to have forgotten about that beach trip with her friends, it begs the question whether they still see each other to relive their precious memories. But as Hee-do pointed out, “Nothing lasts forever. Everything is momentary. They all flow away. And that’s not always a bad thing.”
“Twenty-Five Twenty One” reminds us that friends, past loves, victories and all our precious moments become a part of our past. However, that doesn’t diminish their worth at that point in our lives. Baek Yi-jin and Na Hee-do’s story is heartfelt and memorable despite its end, which makes “Twenty Five Twenty One” one of the best K-dramas so far this year.
