A new gang of misfits is arriving as “Confidence Queen” premieres on Prime Video this September 6. Led by “Marry My Husband” star Park Min-young, with Park Hee-soon and Joo Jong-hyuk, the series follows three comedic con artists who pull off elaborate schemes to take down corrupt villains. Adding to the buzz, parts of the K-drama were filmed in the Philippines, making it extra special for Filipino fans. In this exclusive interview, the cast of “Confidence Queen” shares more reasons why the series deserves a spot on your watchlist.
‘Confidence Queen’ mixes comedy in action-packed, thrilling episodes
In the trailer for “Confidence Queen,” Park Min-young (Yun Yi-rang) transforms into a glamorous socialite, flight attendant, and even a doctor — disguises used in the team’s schemes against the greedy. She is joined by Park Hee-soon (James) and Joo Jong-hyuk (Myung Gu-ho), both also donning bold disguises to give criminals a taste of their own medicine.
With such over-the-top getups, we asked the cast how they managed to film those “serious” con scenes without breaking character.
“There were so many times I burst out laughing while filming those fun con scenes. And honestly, I was the one who broke character the most,” Park Min-young said.
Park Hee-soon and Joo Jong-hyuk, however, both pointed to the veteran actor as the one with the most bloopers.
“Oh, we cracked up all the time. It was especially hard to keep a straight face when we had to act seriously while wearing ridiculous disguises and making exaggerated gestures. Honestly, I think I was the one who broke character the most,” Park Hee-soon admitted.
Joo Jong-hyuk agreed, sharing how much laughter filled the set. “There were times when he (Park Hee-soon) cracked up at his own ad-libs, creating bloopers. His ad-libs were always unpredictable, so I often burst out laughing too. I also laughed a lot just seeing the disguises the two of them wore,” he told Hallyudorama.
The Korean remake promises a new take to the original Japanese drama
While “Confidence Queen” takes inspiration from the Japanese hit “The Confidence Man JP,” viewers can expect a fresh take in the Korean remake. According to Park Hee-soon, one key difference is how the three leads’ backstories are explored in greater depth.
“In the Korean version, there are moments where the pasts of the three characters are revealed, with hidden details that spark curiosity and create ‘twists within twists,’” Joo Jong-hyuk shared.
He added, “What sets it apart from the original is the uniquely Korean comedic elements, and I think the most appealing part will be how the three constantly shift roles according to the situation.”
‘Confidence Queen’ on Prime Video shot some scenes in the Philippines
Filipino K-drama fans have extra reason to be excited for “Confidence Queen” on Prime Video—the series filmed some scenes in the Philippines. While details remain under wraps, fans spotted Park Min-young and Joo Jong-hyuk shooting in the country last year.
“To all our Filipino fans who always support us, thank you so much. And since we filmed some scenes in the Philippines, I hope you’ll enjoy it even more,” Park Min-young shared.
Joo Jong-hyuk also revealed his personal connection: “I studied abroad in the Philippines, so I feel a deep connection with the country. Knowing that my work is being released there feels special,” he said.
Exciting cameos from Song Ji-hyo, Lee Yi-kyung, Rowoon, and more
Another reason to watch “Confidence Queen” is its exciting lineup of special appearances. From the trailer, we already saw Song Ji-hyo of “Running Man” and “Marry My Husband” star Lee Yi-kyung. It has also been reported that Rowoon will make a cameo, marking his reunion with his “Destined With You” director Nam Ki-hoon, who also helms the drama.
It’s a story about punishing the corrupt
There’s something deeply satisfying about watching corrupt, greedy characters finally get what they deserve — and that’s exactly what “Confidence Queen” promises to deliver.
“In the Korean version, the villains are portrayed much darker, which makes the catharsis of seeing them punished all the more powerful. That’s what truly sets this version apart, Park Hee-soon shared.
