Gong Yoo, in a video released by French fashion luxury brand Louis Vuitton, discussed his character in “Goblin.”
“There was a show called ‘Goblin,’ and in this show, I played a character, Kim Shin. The character Kim Shin from the show was the most challenging for me,” Gong Yoo said.
In “Goblin,” Gong Yoo portrayed Kim Shin, a decorated military general who was cursed to remain immortal. For the curse to be lifted, Kim Shin, who became a goblin, has to find his destined bride. She then needs to help Kim Shin remove the mystical sword on which he was impaled on. Only then can he find his rest.
“Compared to other characters I played before, he was the loneliest, most hurt, and saddest character I’ve portrayed,” Gong Yoo said.
“Goblin,” available on Netflix and Viu in the Philippines, is also known as “The Lonely and Great God.” The 2016 K-drama also stars Kim Go-eun as the goblin’s bride and Lee Dong-wook as a grim reaper.
Gong Yoo also reminisced about the time he was doing “Goblin” and other projects. At that time, he said, he played various characters and starred in diverse genres.
“Looking back in 2016 and 2017, in these two years in my whole acting career, I did so many shootings in the shortest duration of time.”
In 2016, Gong Yoo starred in a series of blockbuster films: “A Man and a Woman,” “Train to Busan,” and “The Hit of Age and Shadows”
“It was tough but worthwhile,” Gong Yoo said about those times. “I had fun without losing my motivation,” he added.
Gong Yoo is new Louis Vuitton house ambassador
In the Louis Vuitton video, he also looked back at his partnership with the brand. It also featured his appearance at the Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Spring-Summer 2025 Show.
After years of collaboration and appearances with Louis Vuitton, Gong Yoo was recently announced as its house ambassador.
“Gong Yoo for Louis Vuitton. The Maison and Men’s Creative Director @Pharrell are pleased to welcome the Korean actor as the newest House Ambassador, embarking on a new chapter together,” the fashion brand said in a tweet on Tuesday.
K-drama fans first loved Gong Yoo as Choi Han-kyul, the leading man and coffee shop owner in “Coffee Prince.” As part of his shop’s concept, Choi Han-kyul only hires good looking employees. Things get complicated when he falls for Go Eun-chan (Yoon Eun-hye), a tomboyish woman who pretends to be a man in order to work at the coffee shop.
In 2021, Gong Yoo starred in the science fiction film “Seo Bok” with Park Bo-gum. That same year, Gong Yoo appeared in the series “The Silent Sea,” also a sci-fi. He also had a cameo in the hit Netflix series “Squid Game.” He will return in the series’ second season this year.
Gong Yoo also had a cameo in “Wonderland,” which stars Park Bo-gum, Bae Suzy, and Choi Woo-shik. He will be seen next in the mystery series “The Trunk” with Seo Hyun-jin.
