K-drama royalty Kim Tae-hee and fan-favorite Kim Ji-hoon are set to appear in “Butterfly,” Prime Video’s upcoming character-driven spy thriller starring and executive produced by Daniel Dae Kim.
Based on the BOOM! Studios graphic novel created by Arash Amel, the six-episode English-language series will premiere globally on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
Prime Video today unveiled the official trailer and key art for “Butterfly,” a globe-spanning espionage drama set primarily in South Korea. The series centers on David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic and unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative whose life is turned upside down when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him. He soon finds himself pursued by Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a sociopathic young agent sent by a secretive spy organization called Caddis.
Kim Tae-hee, beloved for her roles in K-dramas such as “Stairway to Heaven” and “Lies Hidden in My Garden,” portrays a mysterious role seemingly connected to Jung’s past.
Meanwhile, Kim Ji-hoon, most recently praised for his scene-stealing performances in “The Haunted Palace” and “Money Heist: Korea,” makes his Hollywood debut as an assassin tasked with hunting down Jung.
Park Hae-soo, known for his roles in “Squid Game” and “Money Heist: Korea,” also plays a key supporting role. Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa, who both starred in “Reply 1994” and “Reply 1988,” will appear in guest roles.
Reina Hardesty , Piper Perabo, and Louis Landau join Daniel Dae Kim as series regulars. Charles Parnell, Sean Dulake, and Nayoon Kim round out the recurring cast.
“Butterfly” is created by Ken Woodruff and acclaimed novelist Steph Cha, with Woodruff serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Woodruff, Cha, Daniel Dae Kim, and John Cheng for 3AD; Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for BOOM! Studios; and Arash Amel for The Amel Company. Adam Yoelin serves as co-executive producer for BOOM! Studios. Kim’s production company, 3AD, developed the series under its first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Kitao Sakurai directed the first two episodes of the series.
With a star-studded cast, Korean setting, and a gripping emotional core, “Butterfly” is poised to be a must-watch global thriller for K-drama and espionage fans alike.
