“Love Next Door” actor Jung Hae-in portrays an idealistic newbie police officer in the movie “I, the Executioner.”

A sequel to the 2015 film “Veteran,” “I, the Executioner” brings back Hwang Jung-min as veteran detective Seo Do-cheol. In the new film, the seasoned detective and his team continue to relentlessly fight criminals, often at the expense of their personal lives.

When the killing of a professor is linked to previous cases, the specter of a possible serial killer troubles the nation. Further chaos ensues when the killer posts a video revealing the next target. The team recruits rookie officer Park Sun-woo (Jung Hae-in), who is known for his strong sense of justice, to help with the case.

Jung Hae-in reportedly underwent extensive action training, from basic fitness exercises to martial arts and parkour, to prepare for his role in “I, the Executioner.”

In the movie’s trailer, he is shown in a police uniform, fighting a criminal. “I wanted to be a cop after seeing you catch Jo Tae-oh,” his character then tells Seo Do-cheol.

Jung Hae-in starred as a military police officer catching deserters in “D.P.,” a North Korean spy in “Snowdrop,” and an immortal humanoid in “Connect.”

On why he joined “I, the Executioner,” he was quoted as saying: “This is a piece that captures something penetrating this time and society.”

“I, the Executioner” is directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, known as Korea’s “Action Kid.” His other notable works include “Smugglers,” “Escape from Mogadishu,” “The Unjust,” and “Veteran.”

“Since the first film was so beloved, I spent a lot of time figuring out how to bring something new to the table,” Ryoo Seung-wan was quoted as saying.

“If the strength of the first film was its exhilaration, then with the sequel, I aimed to push forward with a more powerful force,” he added.

Produced by CJ ENM and distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Discovery company, “I, the Executioner” started screening in Philippine cinemas today.
