SUGA, Min Yoongi, Agust D, call him by any of his names, there is one thing that’s constant and that’s his love for creating music, as evident in the new Disney+ documentary. “SUGA: Road to D-Day” is an introspection to the BTS rapper’s creative thought process.

Songwriter SUGA

SUGA is a natural storyteller who uses music as his canvas. Starting his career not as an idol but as a composer and music producer speaks a lot about his passion and we witness that in the documentary as he encounters a songwriter’s block.

“There were so many stories I wanted to tell. Did I lose them because I’ve achieved so much?”

This is the conundrum SUGA encounters as he prepares for his latest album D-Day.

Finding inspiration

Fortunately for all of us, SUGA finds his creative foot again, drawing inspiration from other artists including the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. The award-winning film score composer passed away last March after years of battling cancer.

It’s a touching scene as two artists of different generations bond over their singular passion. Despite his doubts and insecurities about his album, SUGA’s commitment to songwriting is renewed as he looks forward to the kind of music he can create as he gets older.

August D’s ‘D-Day’

SUGA a.k.a. Agust D’s latest solo album D-Day is now being touted as his greatest solo work. It’s easy to spot why as his lyrics reflect the desire for freedom and his philosophical musings about what is generally wrong in today’s world. In the single “Haegeum” he talks about drowning out the noise due to excessive information and just living in the present. True to his BTS roots, his music challenges the norms and inspires listeners to stay true to oneself.
